The Nature and Meaning of Human Beings

In the Sufi perspective, Human Beings participate in the Nature and Meaning of
Reality in two inter-related ways, which together characterize our own Nature and
Meaning.

First, each individual Human Being is a unique differentiation of the Unity of Reality
and a partial realization of its total possibilities.   We are each born at a certain time, at
a certain place, and live out certain possibilities in Life.

To the extent that the realization of possibilities is the Nature and Meaning of Reality,
the corresponding Nature and Meaning of Human Beings is just our participation in
that overall realization of possibilities.

The unique Nature of Human Beings, however, is that we are also capable of being
aware of, and thereby reflecting, within ourselves, both the Unity of Reality and the
realization of every other differentiation/possibility.   There is nothing in Reality
(throughout all space and time, for example) that we're incapable of reflecting within
ourselves.

This additional, although not always realized, Nature and Meaning of Human Beings
is that we can each be a "microcosm" of the Nature and Meaning of all of Reality . . .
